Why do I need a Life Coach?
Why do I need a life coach? This is my number one questions that I get from potential clients. The second question that I receive as a follow up is, “What happens in life coaching?”
I would like to dispel the myth that life coaching is a sham or mystical. It is a complete process that involves the person exploring themselves and their way of being. This process explores the inner part of themselves and the external part of themselves that they are experiencing. The process also involves a coach who guides and encourages the person exploring their lives up until today and then create a road map for the future.
Signs You Might Need a Life Coach
I meet with a lot of people who have found that their life is out of balance. Their relationships or not fulfilling or non existent. Their jobs and careers have taken turns that have not worked out long term. Their reactions to people or to experiences are not balanced. They may get extremely angry or they may become withdrawn instead of clearly stating their concerns. People need a life coach when their heart and their mind become out of balance. The person thinks too hard to make decisions without trusting their heart or their intuition. The opposite can happen where the person thinks clearly from their heart, but there is very little rational reasoning involved. People who need life coaches are not feeling fulfilled or they are disappointed in what has happened in their lives. The unexpected became the normal.
What Happens in Life Coaching?
What happens in Life Coaching is not mystical or a sham. A good coach will encourage the person to first of all tell their story. Their story is important and I encourage my clients to talk to me about the good things, the not so good things, how their life came to where it is today and share anything that they believe is relevant. I listen not only to the words of my clients, but I listen between the lines of what they may be hiding or what is too painful to look at. I also listen to where they believe the bad things started and who they believe is responsible. There is a lot of freedom that comes with telling your story in a safe place.
Self-Reflection: The Hardest but Most Important Step
The second thing that happens in life coaching is the hardest thing. It is looking inside of ourselves and finding out what we have learned in life that has contributed to where we are today. Many people do not like this phase but it is so important to see
For example, I developed fear in a specific place. Returning there later, I could feel the same emotions I had when I left the first time. It was powerful to realize that my heart and mind were still carrying that fear. During this phase, deep breathing exercises can help clear the mind and heart. I also send clients on field trips to peaceful, calm places where they can center themselves, away from the fast-paced world around us.
Creating a Roadmap for Your Future
The third step is creating a roadmap for your future. If you could change anything in your life, what would it be? How would you feel about that change? What do you want to accomplish? I work with clients to develop a successful roadmap that helps them make even the smallest changes in perception, as well as bigger changes in life decisions.
Tracking Your Progress and Adjusting Your Goals
The final step is measuring your progress. Where were you when you started, and where are you now? Do you need to make adjustments, or is your journey unfolding as you imagined? Do others around you notice the difference? This is also a time to explore new goals to master.
