Life Coaching

When should I seek a life coach?

One of the things that I love about the term "life coaching" is that it can be a process that works for the person seeking a coach.  One size does not fit all in this process.  One definition that I thought helped to make it clear is "A life coach is someone that looks to empower others by helping them to make, meet and exceed goals in both their professional and personal lives".   I talked to people every day who know deep in their hearts that there is something missing, wrong, or speaking to them.  The problem is that they do not want to work with a psychologist because they know that there isn't something clinically wrong.  The issue is either in their outside surroundings or somewhere inside of their "soul".  As a life coach, I can help you look from an outside perspective, encourage, motivate and help you dream.  Then you can see what is really happening and help you to find the answers that work for you.

How do we know if we should seek out a life coach or a therapist or psychologist? There are some simple questions to ask yourself to understand your level of need.

Career Coaching

Career coaching is a more refined part of life coaching.  It is easy to get stuck in a dead-end job because of the limiting feeling that "this is all that there is".  Do you feel like each day is a "day only to endure?   Do you feel like you were meant to do something different in your career but it can't happen?  Do you freeze during job interviews?  Do you go to work because of fear that you won't be successful elsewhere?  These are only a sample of questions that I find people who need a career coach say yes to.  Career coaching is less about resumes and practicing interviewing skills, although that is a small part.  We will work together on what your passion in life is, what makes you want to get out of bed each day and where you see yourself in your future.  One of the things that will happen is that we will work together on what is holding your back and how to overcome those obstacles.

How the process works

  • Step 1 - Orientation. Discover if we are a good fit to help you achieve your goals.

  • Step 2 - Get to know you. This is longer than you might think, but we will learn about your past, your present and discover where your future lies.

  • Step 3 - Work on what is holding you back or what is in the way. Develop small steps where success is achievable and move forward together.

  • Step 4 - I hate to say this, but there will be some things that we don't anticipate. It is called, "Life". We will work on what those new things are and decide what is next.

  • Maintenance - When you reach this stage, you will want to enjoy your successes and make small changes along the way. Sometimes, you will get to this point and realize that you want to keep moving forward.

I coach because Life Coaching worked for me.

I felt like I just existed and life happened to me.
— Laura Benson

During the decade of my thirties and forties, I experienced several transitions: Divorce, single parenting, loss of a job, financial difficulties, and then entering the dating field for the first time in twenty years. I had not prepared for the life that I now found myself in. I didn’t feel crazy enough for therapy, but I felt stuck and couldn’t find a way to move forward. I felt like I just existed and life happened to me. I had several relationships with men where my heart was broken. I couldn’t catch a dream and have it stick. I kept looking and found a coach through the internet. I thought, “I have tried everything else, why not”. It was the best experience of my life. I knew the steps to take, I just needed someone to help me find the answers within myself. I also needed the encouragement desperately. I was hesitant at first to spend the money on myself, however, I came to the point where I couldn’t think of not having my sessions. We charted a course and as I went along, I made changes that were made with better information. It was a growing process. My goal was to find lasting love, peace and joy. I am still on the journey and will always be, but I have found myself much closer to my destination.
